USA Paycheck Calculator 2026
Calculate your real take-home pay after federal tax, state tax, FICA & 401(k)
How Your Paycheck is Calculated in the USA
Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus several mandatory and voluntary deductions. Understanding each component helps you plan your budget, negotiate raises, and optimize your tax situation.
The Four Main Deductions
- Federal Income Tax: Progressive tax based on your filing status and income. 2026 brackets range from 10% to 37%.
- State Income Tax: Varies by state. Nine states (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming) have NO state income tax.
- FICA (Social Security + Medicare): 6.2% for Social Security (on income up to $176,100 in 2026) + 1.45% Medicare (no cap) + 0.9% additional Medicare on income over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married).
- Pre-Tax Deductions: 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums reduce your taxable income before federal and state taxes are calculated.
2026 Federal Tax Brackets (Single Filer)
- 10% on income up to $11,925
- 12% on income $11,926 - $48,475
- 22% on income $48,476 - $103,350
- 24% on income $103,351 - $197,300
- 32% on income $197,301 - $250,525
- 35% on income $250,526 - $626,350
- 37% on income over $626,350
Real Example: $75,000 Salary in California (Single)
- Gross Annual: $75,000
- 401(k) contribution: -$6,000 → Taxable income: $69,000
- Federal Tax (2026 brackets): ~$8,900
- California State Tax (~6%): ~$4,140
- FICA (7.65%): $5,738
- Total Taxes: ~$18,778 (25% effective rate)
- Take-Home: ~$56,222/year = $2,162/biweekly
How to Increase Your Take-Home Pay
- Max out 401(k): Reduces taxable income AND builds retirement savings
- Use HSA/FSA: Pre-tax health savings accounts lower taxable income
- Check W-4 allowances: Too much withholding = interest-free loan to IRS
- Move to no-tax state: Texas, Florida, Nevada save you thousands
- Negotiate gross salary: A $5,000 raise often nets $3,000+ after taxes
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my actual paycheck different from this calculation?
This calculator uses 2026 standard tax brackets and average state rates. Your actual paycheck may differ due to: W-4 withholding allowances, local/city taxes, union dues, garnishments, additional voluntary deductions, or employer-specific benefit costs. Use this as an estimate, not an official figure.
What is the standard deduction for 2026?
For 2026 tax year: Single filers $15,000, Married Filing Jointly $30,000, Head of Household $22,500. The calculator applies this automatically when computing federal tax.
Should I contribute more to my 401(k)?
If your employer offers a match, contribute at least enough to get the full match (free money). Beyond that, maxing out 401(k) ($23,500 in 2026) reduces your taxable income significantly. If you're in the 22%+ bracket, every $1,000 contributed saves ~$220 in federal tax.
What states have no income tax?
Nine states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (only taxes dividends/interest), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Moving to one of these can save thousands annually.
How is FICA calculated?
FICA has two parts: Social Security (6.2% on income up to $176,100 in 2026) and Medicare (1.45% on all income, plus 0.9% additional on income over $200,000 for single filers). Your employer matches these amounts, but you only see your half on your paycheck.
