SIP Calculator - Mutual Fund Returns
Calculate your SIP returns for systematic investment planning in India
How SIP Calculator Works
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) allows you to invest a fixed amount regularly in mutual funds. This calculator uses the power of compounding formula to estimate your returns based on historical market performance.
SIP Calculation Formula
The calculation is based on the Future Value of SIP formula:
- FV = P × [((1 + r)^n - 1) / r] × (1 + r)
- Where: P = Monthly Investment, r = Monthly Return Rate, n = Total Months
- This assumes returns are compounded monthly
Example: ₹10,000 SIP for 10 Years at 12% Return
- Total Investment: ₹10,000 × 12 months × 10 years = ₹12,00,000
- Estimated Returns: ₹10,62,000 (through compounding)
- Maturity Value: ₹22,62,000
- Wealth Gained: 88.5% of your investment
Benefits of SIP Investment
- Rupee Cost Averaging: You buy more units when markets are low and fewer when markets are high
- Power of Compounding: Your returns generate further returns over time
- Disciplined Investing: Regular monthly investments build wealth systematically
- Flexibility: Start with as low as ₹500 per month

Is SIP better than lump sum investment?
SIP is better for most investors because it reduces market timing risk through rupee cost averaging. However, if you have a large corpus and the market is low, lump sum can give better returns. For regular income earners, SIP is the recommended approach by SEBI.
What is a good SIP return rate in India?
Historically, equity mutual funds in India have given 12-15% annual returns over 10+ year periods. Large-cap funds typically give 10-12%, while mid-cap and small-cap funds can give 15-18% but with higher volatility. Always check the fund's 10-year CAGR before investing.
Should I increase my SIP amount every year?
Yes, increasing your SIP by 5-10% annually (step-up SIP) can significantly boost your corpus. For example, a ₹10,000 SIP with 10% annual step-up for 20 years at 12% return can grow to ₹1.8 crores compared to ₹98 lakhs without step-up.
How is SIP taxed in India?
Equity SIPs are taxed as per capital gains rules: LTCG (Long-Term Capital Gains) of up to ₹1 lakh per year is tax-free. Gains above ₹1 lakh are taxed at 10%. STCG (Short-Term Capital Gains, redemption within 1 year) is taxed at 15%.
Can I withdraw my SIP before maturity?
Yes, SIPs are liquid investments. You can redeem (withdraw) your mutual fund units anytime. However, exiting before 1 year attracts STCG tax (15%), and exiting before 3-5 years may result in lower returns due to market volatility. SIPs are designed for long-term wealth creation (5+ years).
